Is Obesity a disease

Question: Is Obesity an ailment? Answer: Anwar Mostafawy Elizabeth Smith English 101 30, March, 2015 The United States is the second most large industrialized nation on the planet (ProCon). Stoutness is normal these days for youngsters and youngsters all around the globe. I might want to speak progressively about it. My intended interest group in this paper is the youngsters and their folks. I might want to concentrate on the corpulence of kids. My proposal are meaning of heftiness, realities about stoutness, Pro is corpulence a malady, Con of weight is an infection, Childhood weight, and individual experience. Numerous individuals are influenced by heftiness and not mindful of it (OAC). Corpulence is a condition that is related with having an overabundance of muscle to fat ratio, characterized by hereditary natural factors that are hard to control when eating less junk food (OAC). Corpulence is having weight list (BMI) of 30 or more prominent (OAC). BMI is a device used to quantify heftiness (OAC). Weight expands the danger of having ailment, for example, diabetes, a sleeping disorder, and hypertension (OAC). There are two different ways to gauge the weight, which is the BMI, and abdomen boundary. BMI is estimated by isolating people weight in kilogram by the stature in meter squared (OAC). Midriff periphery is less basic technique utilized for figuring (OAC). To discover the midsection boundary, one must wrap a measuring tape around the zone over the hip bone and underneath the rib confine (OAC). There are numerous reasons for corpulence, for example, conduct, condition, and hereditary qualities (OAC). Conduct is propensity identified with pick food and be undesirable (OAC). Condition can affect the way of life and wellbeing choice (OAC). Individuals currently center around taking more consideration as opposed to strolling (OAC). Hereditary qualities can cause certain scatters which bring about heftiness (OAC). Im concurring with this issue heftiness is an infection, and there are numerous reasons. In the first place, Obesity meets with meaning of maladies which was laid in 2013 by the American Medical Association. It recognized three standards to characterize ailment: right off the bat, a debilitation of the ordinary working of some part of the body; second trademark signs and side effects; and third damage or bleakness (ProCo). The weight causes debilitation and builds the damage, so it coordinates the meaning of American Medical Associative. Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness and Preventative Medicine Physician at Johns Hopkins University, expressed stoutness fulfills all the definitions and models of what an illness and ailment is... The one distinction is that individuals who have heftiness need to wear their infection outwardly (ProCon). On June 18, 2013, the American Medical Association perceived weight as an illness requiring a scope of cli nical mediations to propel stoutness treatment and avoidance (ProCon). The subsequent explanation is stoutness resembles other sickness since it hinders the ordinary working of the body. For instance individuals who are stout, have fat that causes the overproduction of leptin (ProCon). Heftiness can weaken typical portability and scope of movement in knees and hips, and fat patients make up 33% of all joint substitution activities (ProCon). Stoutness is likewise connected to regenerative impedance, adding to sexual brokenness in genders, fruitlessness and danger of unnatural birth cycle in ladies, and lower sperm includes in men (ProCon). The third explanation is that the stoutness diminishes an individual's future and can cause passing, as different illnesses (ProCon). It can diminish 3 years from grown-up life, and 10 years for other people (ProCon). There are 300,000 passings for every year from heftiness (ProCon). Individuals who are large have a 50-100% expanded danger of death from all causes (ProCon). There are numerous individuals won't concur me, since they think the ailment is a preventable hazard factor for different ailments and conditions, and isn't a malady itself (ProCon). Likewise, The Obesity is a symptom not malady (ProCon). The weight is consequence of eating excessively (ProCon). Fat individuals live long and Obesity is the aftereffect of stationary ways of life (ProCon). The Children are the most significant part to discuss. They are getting a great deal of overweight from inexpensive food or from their folks propensities. The guardians now dont look to have solid food in their home on account of various reasons, for example, the time or possibly sound food is costly to be purchased. So the kids have additionally changed their food propensities. They purchase inexpensive food instead of hanging tight for her/his mom to cook for them after she completes her activity. Inexpensive food has made the kids change their propensity for eating. They like cheap food more than vegetables or organic products. The second explanation of having stout kids is the TV and internet based life, and Screen time. It is a main consideration adding to youth heftiness (Children, Adolescents, Obesity, and the Media). It causes them to sit before the screen, instead of having physical exercises (Children, Adolescents, Obesity, and the Media). From the TV they can see the publi cizing of undesirable food and it impacts the childrens capacity to settle on solid food decisions. Additionally, it increments nibbling conduct while staring at the TV (Children, Adolescents, Obesity, and the Media). There are legends and certainties about weight issue and stoutness in kids (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). First Myth is the Childhood corpulence is hereditary, so theres nothing you can do about it, however in all actuality - while a people qualities do impact weight, they are just a single little piece of the condition. Albeit a few youngsters are more inclined to putting on weight than others, that doesnt mean theyre bound for weight issues. Most children can keep up a sound weight on the off chance that they eat right and exercise (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). The subsequent legend is Children who are fat or overweight ought to be put on a tight eating routine, however in all actuality - Unless coordinated by your childs specialist in any case, the treatment for youth stoutness isn't weight reduction. The objective ought to be to slow or stop weight gain, permitting your youngster to develop into their optimal (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). The third legend is its simply infant fat. Youngsters will grow out of the weight, yet in all actuality Childhood corpulence doesnt consistently lead to heftiness in adulthood, yet it raises the dangers drastically. Most of youngsters who are overweight whenever during the preschool or grade school are as yet overweight as they enter their teenagers. Most children don't grow out of the issue (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). The best arrangement is to instruct the youngsters about their wellbeing and showing them what to eat, such as revealing to them the names of vegetables or foods grown from the ground know the benefit of eating them (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). Additionally, The guardians should prepare solid food before them and reveal to them why its bravo (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). Inclusion in sports that they love as a day by day exercise can likewise assist them with battling corpulence (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). Children must keep away from the TV and PCs in their leisure time and ought to be urged to improve things as opposed to sitting before screens (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). From my experience of my sister, who is 21 years of age, I have adapted such huge numbers of things. She has been overweight from quite a while. Because of her corpulent body she had a great deal of medical issues throughout her life. She had issues while breathing when she dozed and it had been perilous for her. Likewise, when she got hitched she got past the point where it is possible to convey child since she had issues with her overweight. All the specialists revealed to her that on the off chance that she loses her weight she would have the option to imagine quicker. So from the corpulence she couldnt have a youngster like any ladies has typical weight. All her medical issue is from her overweight, and the arrangement is to get in shape, so that is the reason I accept the stoutness is an ailment, on the grounds that a great deal of large individuals have medical issue from their overwhelming weight, for example, difficult to move, heart issue, pulse, and other issue that they fa ce from their overweight. Regardless of whether others have solid body and they have ailment they have other explanation from their infection. Eating tidbits and snacks in the school climate is a broad worry in making improved dietary examples for youngsters and decreasing the pace of youth weight. My very own couple answers and concerns contain: * Having strong snack rules of what not to convey to class (no pop, chips and confectionaries). * Provision of a microwave in the breakout region to engage progressively hodgepodge close by increasingly liberal hot tidbits. * kids who devour too much little for the length of the daytime every now and again nibble irrationally resulting to class. This prompts eating a littler sum or being a basic having at dinner. Extra eating later on around evening time is inflexible. This adds solidly to the extended degree of weight in adolescents * Making post-school snacks lighter, for instance, soups, vegetable plate and plunges, verdant nourishments, to ward off hunger until dinner is great. * Planning games and activities pretty much close to the supper time, for most of families, is difficult to avoid and will exchange off having dinner as a family. Being inventive in preparing of time and endeavoring to eat earlier may be a decision. On the off chance that the family has the ability to compose having dinner all in all as a family, at that point one can manage the post-school snack choices and bolster play or outside activities, the pace of youth weight would through and through drop (nhs.uk). It starts in our homes, trailed by the general stores, trailed by the restaurants, and into the schools. We ought to give our youngsters a great starts and as father mother, endeavor to begin with the principles you think will give a sound and solid condition in house (nhs.uk). Youngsters like chocolate and other sweet food, we dont need to prevent them from eating those, however we have to have week after week breaking point of eating these (Weight Problems and Obesity in Children). Use of Irony, Diction, and Imagery in My Last Duchess :: Robert Browning, My Last Duchess

In his emotional monolog, Robert Browning utilizes incongruity, lingual authority, and symbolism to accomplish a frightful impact. Robert Browning every now and again composed emotional monologs to upgrade the dim and voracious characteristics in his works. Searing's utilization of this specific style is to bring out the unconstrained response of an individual in aparticular circumstance or emergency (Napierkowski 170). A sonnet may state a certain something, yet when blended in with sensational monolog, it might present an importance at chances with the speaker's intention(Napierkowski 170). This change may show the peruser more knowledge into the sonnet without legitimately expressing the hidden realities. The peruser is permitted to segregate a solitary second wherein the character uncovers himself all the more unmistakably (Napierkowski 171). Cooking's utilization of emotional monolog arranges the peruser to suspend moral judgment (Napierkowski 171) making a haughtiness drift over a large number of his works. Cooking utilizes incongruity related to sensational monolog to create a vile and oppressive impact. Incongruity, much like emotional monolog, can make the peruser question the genuine hidden importance of the entry. This concise turmoil makes a scariness be achieved in the work. In My Last Duchess, verbal incongruity is exhibited when the Duke says to his visitors, even had you expertise in discourse . . . which I have not(35-36). All through the sonnet the Duke demonstrates that he is a serious cleaned speaker(Markley 172). The Duke is certifiably not an unassuming man, however him offering this apparently modest expression amidst all his capacity stricken comments sets up situational incongruity. Sensational monolog can make an unforseen amusing articulation have an unpropitious encompassing that absolutely envelops the peruser's consideration. An individual may at first become exceptionally upset if an unannounced late night guest thumped on their entryway, similarly as the Duke's unexpected comment carried a tired inclination to the peruser. All through My Last Duchess, Browning utilizes word usage to additionally expand the eerie impact of his sensational monolog. His exact and dissipated word decision is intended to cause the peruser to perceive the basic haughtiness in his discourse to the Count's emissary. The Duke alludes to his previous spouse's representations profundity and energy so as to put a shadiness over the authenticity of the work of art. This, alongside the swoon and half-flush appearance that bites the dust along her throat, realizes a cloudy appearance to the sonnet. The Duke's frivolous absence of face is clear in his desire of the Duchess' consideration toward others. Her kindheartedness appalls the Duke, and makes him stoop down to rambling off orders toward her.

interview joy buolamwini

interview joy buolamwini i mentioned joy in a blog post a few weeks ago, when she won the $50000 grand prize in the search for hidden figures contest. ive been a huge fan of joys work ever since i read her blog post on inclusive coding, or incoding.  shes a fulbright fellow and a rhodes scholar, and now shes at the center for civic media, working on projects that empower communities via tech education and highlight bias in algorithms. i had the distinct privilege of chatting with her last week and we had a fun conversation about algorithmic bias, surveillance, and her work at the media lab. check it out: * * * * * learn more about: the ALGORITHMIC JUSTICE LEAGUE the CENTER FOR CIVIC MEDIA the MEDIA LAB * * * * * some snippets: (on algorithmic bias) (and how facial recognition software wont detect her face unless shes wearing a white mask): This was an issue Id run into when I was an undergraduate. I went to Georgia Tech and did my bachelors in computer science, and I used to work in a social robots lab. And some of the projects I did there involved computer vision, and in that contextI had a hard time being picked up [by facial recognition software]. I would end up borrowing my roommates face to get the job done So I started exploring that a little bit. Why was this happening? Was it just about my facial features, was it about the illumination, was it about the pose, what was going on? And then I read this report called the Perpetual Line-Up, which talks about unregulated use of facial recognition in the United States, and it showed that one in two adults 117 million people in the US have their faces in facial recognition databases that can currently be searched unwarranted, using algorithms that havent been audited for accuracy. Heres the catch: with some initial tests to see the demographic accuracy of some of these facial recognition systems, they saw that the systems performed worse for women overall, worse for people who were considered younger (under 24), and worse overall for people of color so its not just me, having one bad incident! This is something a bit more systematic. (on why it matters) So lets look into the realm of law enforcementbecause here thats where you have the potential issue of having civil liberties being breached, and also you start going into the realm of disparate impact. Is this technology that were using being targeted to a specific demographic more than another? What I was very concerned about was misidentification if Im tagged as somebody else [on Facebook], okay, maybe its funny, maybe its offensive, but perhaps its not as high stakes as if Im misidentified as a criminal suspect. (about being at the center for civic media) I do not know if Algorithmic Justice League would have existed had I not been a part of the Center for Civic Mediajust having the freedom to explore ideas that might not always resonate with the core technical leanings of a space like MIT. Were definitely looking at the social impact of technology, so its not, Can we make it bigger, faster, stronger, more efficient, smaller? But starting at, Should we be doing this in the first place? Starting at issues of power: who has control? who gets to decide and why, and what does that tell us about society? And so in exploring this, I could have viewed my face not being consistently detected as, Oh, this is a technical challenge but being in the space of the Center for Civic Media definitely orients me to [say], This is not just a technical challenge this is as much a reflection of society as other spaces where you see inequities that need to be addressed. The New Jim Crow Mass Incarceration - 1370 Words

Racism in the United States has not remained the same over time since its creation. Racism has shifted, changed, and shaped into unrecognizable ways that fit into the fabric of the American society to render it nearly invisible to the majority of Americans. Michelle Alexander, in her book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness shatters this dominantly held belief. The New Jim Crow makes a reader profoundly question whether the high rates of incarceration in the United States is an attempt to maintain blacks as an underclass. Michelle Alexander makes the assertion that â€Å"[w]e have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it† using the criminal justice system and colorblind rhetoric. (Alexander 2). The result is a population of Black and Latino men who face barriers and deprivation of rights as did Blacks during the Jim Crow era. Therefore, mass incarceration has become the new Jim Crow. In making the case that mass incarcerati on is the new version of Jim Crow, Alexander moves through a history of racial caste systems from slavery to Jim Crow. Alexander demonstrates this history by explaining that it was during these racially periods of American history that the platform was set for maintaining a black underclass through the use of race-neutral language. Slavery was an obvious racial caste system in which the laws, including the U.S. Constitution, were used to ensure that blacks would live and be treated as a distinct group. Gendered Relations And Masculinity Is Influenced By Football

Gendered institutions influence everyone in a different way, but for the most part football influenced me the most as an individual. After locker room talks and before and after practices and football games, made me realize how gendered relations and masculinity is influenced by football. Like Messner mentions, â€Å"gender identity not as a ‘thing’ that people ‘have’ but as a process of construction that develops, and changes as a person interacts with the social world.† Football has always been engraved in being a male dominant sport due to the aggressiveness and the physicality of the sport so the majority of those initially involved with football is constantly trying to prove one s dominance in an act of masculinity. Throughout high school and the majority of my life football was a big influence on my gender. The biggest impact on me was during my junior year of high school, the fall of 2012. I was seventeen years old. Football made me and fellow teammates as masculine as an individual may be due to the game and all the things that you become accustomed to through football throughout one season. Playing football and all the time spent with my fellow teammates influenced me with the basic things in becoming masculine: men get girls, men are big and strong, men never show emotions, and men are always the dominant one. While I was in high school this was the way in which I acted to be masculine. Old Imperialism vs. New Imperialism Free Essays

Imperialism is the spread of control over territories across the globe. The Industrial Revolution and interests in nationalism created a new period of imperialism around 1750. Old imperialism lasted from 1450- 1750, but imperialism alone remained until 1914. We will write a custom essay sample on Old Imperialism vs. New Imperialism or any similar topic only for you Order Now Old imperialism and new imperialism shared the same basic concept of controlling and utilizing foreign countries. Old imperialism focused mainly on systems of trade while new imperialism took bolder steps to overtaking nations. Old Imperialism was the period from 1450-1750, in which powers were motivated by â€Å"gold, glory, and God†. Political power was controlled by central governments while leaders were busy trying to increase their power. National wealth was widely viewed as holder of power. In old Imperialism, Europeans focused on a cash and carry system, where they purchased goods from native merchants who brought the goods they produced. This led to a focus on a trading system because Europeans didn’t want to take on territorial responsibilities. During the Old imperialism era, Europeans set up trading posts, ports, and docks. These trading centers benefited the places the mother country was supplying too. They had objectives to protect their trading centers in native places and none to obtain territories in them. Europe’s trade within and between native lands led to cultural diversity which may have caused a small breach in unity. However, the old Imperialism era ended due to high costs in taking over territories and too much time to supply the mother country. There was no time to build up a superior, organized, skilled army for anyone. Also, due to the Industrial Revolution there was now a faster more efficient way to create and manufacture products. New Imperialism took place from 1750-1914 in which, Europeans encouraged the acquiring of new native territories in order to invest capital in them to expand their profits. Many others started following European actions such as France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, and Russia. Europeans saw these native lands as the light to opening them politically and economically. Europeans sought out lands that provided new sources of raw materials, cheap labor, markets, areas of investment, and military boosters. As European nations became competitive with one another, here was an increased pressure to practice Imperialism to maintain power. New Imperialism was motivated greatly by the Industrial Revolution and its advancements, and efficiency of manufacturing and supplying products. European nations also focused on opening trade routes that would give them places to sell their goods. Also significant was the Europeans desire to Christianize and â€Å"civilize† other nations through missionary work and the enforcement of European cultures and beliefs. The new Imperialism brought on social changes as well. Many people urged the taking up of the â€Å"White Man’s Burden†, bringing the European version of civilization to the rest of the world, regardless whether they wanted it or not. While old Imperialism and new Imperialism obviously differed they do share some of the same concepts. During each era, both focused on building their nation stronger, superior, and more enhanced than everyone else through political, economic, and militaristic strategies. Both Imperialisms brought on war, hatred, and strong levels of competition among the World. They brought on ethnic diversity as well as cultural diversity throughout. Each significantly boosted economies worldwide, creating hatful competition which would lead to big wars, maybe even two of them. Imperialism refers to colonial expansion across the globe. As more and more countries began competing, it folded out a new playing field of war. Soon, there would be allies, enemies, victories, defeats, and a whole lot of casualties. Yes, this expansionism would lead to World War I, eventually, into World War II and slumping depressions worldwide. How to cite Old Imperialism vs. New Imperialism, Essay examples

The Numbers Behind the Words Can You Make Money Writing Non-Fiction Books - The Writers For Hire

THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE WORDS: CAN YOU MAKE MONEY WRITING NON-FICTION BOOKS? Can You Make Money Writing Non-Fiction Books? We all know an awful lot about something. It’s just the way people are.Your area of expertise might be something useful, like knowing how to fix cars, or it might be something less tangible, say, have an obscene amount of knowledge about cartoons from the late 1970s to the early 1980s (ruh roh, Raggy!).Whatever the case, chances are that, along with being full of information about a topic, people come to you from time to time to ask your opinion about something related to it. Even folks who wouldn’t necessarily call themselves an authority in anything have this happen. For some, once you hit level of knowledge on a topic, the logical next step is to sit down and start writing about it. Writing a non-fiction book can be a great way to expand on your knowledge of something and, best of all, show off how much you know about something (in a good way, not a braggy way). Even in the digital age when everyone is jumping on the inter net to write blogs about what they know, we’re still seeing a lot of books hitting the market, more than 700,000 in 2016 alone. But, even with all those books entering the world every year, how possible is it to actually make a living as a non-fiction writer? Is it still possible, the way it once was, to dedicate your life to writing about topics that you care about the way it once was or do you have to live out your dream by supplementing your writing with a job at the mall? Let's Take a Closer Look at the Money The traditional book route For most of us, when we dream about writing a book, we dream about just that: a book. Dust covers, author photos, hardcovers (and soft) and, paper pages. Glorious, glorious pages. It’s only natural that this is the first thing that comes to mind because, despite ebooks gaining in popularity in the last 10 or so years, people still love to get their hands on a physical book. There’s just something about them that drives us to them. Writers are no different, if you’ve had a dream of writing for any amount of time at all, you’ve probably spend most of that time dreaming about holding a real book with your name all over the cover. So you decide to go for it. The first thing that’s going to happen when you manage to snag yourself a book deal is getting an advance (I’ve cut quite a few steps out here, like finding an agent and prepping your submission, but we’re talkin’ money here). An advance is a kind of loan that publishers use to pay you with up front. In the non-fiction world, you’re typically looking at anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 for your first book. As the link suggests, this can vary a lot depending on things like your level of authority, any audience you may have and the timeliness of the topic. Advances are usually paid out in chunks, typically in thirds. You get the first third when you sign the contract, the second third when you turn in the manuscript and the final third when the book is published. These advances are then paid out by book sales and, if you’re lucky enough to pay out your advance, you start collecting royalties. Royalties are the percentage of each book sale that an author gets. This can range from 7.5% to 15% of the retail price depending on the kind of book that’s being sold (hardcover vs. mass market paperback vs. trade paperback vs. ebook, etc.) and the publisher. Since all deals tend to be different, let’s say you’ve just released a book that sells for $30 as a hardcover. If your royalty is 10%, you get $3.00 for each book sold. Now, let’s also say you managed to secure a $15,000 advance. That means you’d have to sell 5,000 copies of your book to earn out your advance. Any books that you sell after that 5,000th book means money in the bank for you. Okay. You’ve signed the contract, collected you first payment, now what? Well, now you write. That initial chunk of the advance is meant to help you get through the writing phase. A non-fiction book can be a big, long, project and it helps to have a bit of financial freedom from your job to get it done. It’s probably going to take you anywhere from six months to a year to complete your book, depending on how much research you’ve done in advance, how well you know the source material and other factors like that. The first third of your advance is for this section. Then there’s the editing phase. You’re looking at another couple of months to get through this. That’s where the second third of your money goes. The final third of your money comes when you turn in the finished copy of your book. Once you’ve gotten your book done and publishing dates have been set, it’s promotion time. Yup, even if you’re with the bigger publishers, writers still end up doing the bulk of the promo work. This is because with close to a quarter million books hitting the shelves every year, there just aren’t enough marketing people out there. That, and frankly, no one knows your book like you do. If you want your book to be successful, you’re going to need to market your book until you’re sick of it. And, you’re going to have to do it every chance you get. You’ll talk about it on social media, you’ll tell your friends, their friends, your family, their friends, chances are everyone who is every slightly connected to you is going to know that you have a book coming out. If you’re lucky, most of them will buy it. Going the DIY route It wasn’t that long ago that self-publishing was seen as a bit of a fool’s errand. Sure, you might have made some money, but the success stories were few and far between. Flash forward to today where self-published books have been making great strides in terms of quality, being taken serious by both writers and the general public and, best of all, people have been making money doing this. Online retailers like Amazon have made it beyond simple to self-publish a book and sell it on their site, thanks to things like Kindle Direct publishing. Unlike the traditional publishing world, you don’t get any money up front when you go the self-publishing route. In fact, all the associated costs of putting the book together—the ones that would have been covered by the publisher in the traditional publishing market—get covered by you. That means you pay the editors, book designers, cover designers and all that. All this can be done for just a few hundred with turnkey publishing sites, or for tens of thousands with elite editing and publishing services. The more you put in at this stage, the better the chances of your book looking like it was put out by professionals and not just someone who knows Photoshop (because your book will have been put together by professionals). But, once that’s taken care of, you get a bigger piece of the pie on the sales end. Instead of only getting the industry standard of anywhere from 7.5% to 15%, you keep a much higher percentage after the retailer takes their cut. In the case of Amazon Kindle Direct, you get either 35% or 70% of a sale, depending on the circumstances. That bigger chunk of sales that you take home is going to help you pay off what was basically your advance faster (the money you spent putting your book together) and will help you start making some money. What does success look like? Best seller status is something that most writers dream of at some point or another. It’s kind of the old school version of going viral, only with books. Best seller lists are, as you might guess, put together based on how books are selling. They’re calculated on a weekly basis and the criteria, data gathered and stores used to calculate these lists tend to vary widely from list to list. The venerable New York Times best seller list, for example, puts together their list based on the sales from vendors across the United States, although the list is reported confidentially, so no one ever really knows for sure which stores are doing the reporting. USA Today, on the other hand, tells you some of the vendors they rely on for their list. And those are the easy ones to figure out. Just look at how Amazon figures out their numbers here. Go on. I’ll wait for a minute. Had a look? Great. You probably noticed that for every explanation they have, there were exceptions. The trouble with bestseller lists is, among other things, is there’s no guaranteeing anything about them. You could have the best book in the world out there and you book could still struggle to get on the list because of something, anything that happened in the world that week.Tweet this Take a look at the list below (from the New York Times non-fiction list), for example. Notice that the bestselling non-fiction paper is Steven Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. This list, as it happens, represents the week after Hawking’s death. Things like this can throw off the momentum of just about any book, regardless of how well it has been doing in the previous week. According to Bridget Marmion, former Senior Vice President of marketing for publishing houses such as Fararr, Straus and Giroux and Random House, and founder of Your Expert Nation, being on a best seller list is always nice, but it should never be your goal. It’s mostly because of the number of factors at play when determining the lists. If a movie adaptation of a book happens to be coming out the same week as your book (this can happen in non-fiction as easily as it could happen in fiction, think of movies like Eat, Pray, Love and Wild), it’ll be a struggle to get your book on the list. Having said that, if you can get yourself on a best seller list, it can help. â€Å"Being on a list that is important to you audience would move the sales needle, if you’re on it for a few weeks,† says Marmion. She adds that this can also help you with your next book, as traditional publishers are more likely to take a chance on someone whose book has been on a best seller list. The burning question (I’m sure) is just how many books does it take to crack a best seller list? Well, that answer, I’m afraid, is complicated. It depends on the list, the time of year, what else is happening in the world and a host of other things. For traditional lists like the New York Times or USA Today, those numbers look to be anywhere from 3,000 copies to 5,000 copies sold. Getting into the Amazon Top 5 would require sales of about 300 books a day. And, to really complicate things, it’s entirely possible to get on an Amazon best seller list by selling very few books because you’re in a category that’s so specific you’re essentially on your own. Just check out the example located towards the end here, which hit the best seller list with only three books sold. These numbers aren’t high, but most books, especially debut books, don’t even come close to selling that many books. Few books earn out their advances, which means they sell enough books to pay off the advance, and the numbers for average books sold can be as little as 250 books (although like everything in the publishing industry, there’s a lot of factors at play in figuring out exact numbers like that). So...now you've got a book out Congrats! It’s a great feeling being able to hold a book with your name on the front of it (trust me, I know). At this point, you need to decide what it is you want to do with that book. If you want that book to make money, you need to market it. In fact, you should have started marketing it, like, six months before it came out. Unless you’re an established name in your industry, traditional publishing houses aren’t going to put too much effort into marketing your book. With the sheer number of books hitting the shelves every year, publishers just don’t have the time or resources to do that. You have to be prepared to hustle and self-promote your book to make it work. If you have any authors, fiction or non-fiction, on your social media feeds, you’ve seen them doing this before. It takes a lot of time and energy to make it work, but if you want your book to succeed, you have to be ready. As if this didn’t seem daunting enough, according to Nick Morgan, who helps thought leaders and public speakers publish books (among other things), most publishers give a book about two weeks to make money. After that, a book gets remaindered, which is when a book is sent off to discount books stores or remainder bins in book stores. That means you really have to hit the ground running with your book if you hope to get a second book, or even earn back your advance. This can leave a lot of authors feeling betrayed, especially when you add the fact that publishers don’t really promote books enough to help you succeed. Luckily, all is not lost. It’s possible to use your book to help you earn money doing something else. The trick, according to Morgan, is figuring out what that something else is. Having a book (or two) to your name is never a bad thing. Among other things, a book helps people understand that you really know what you’re talking about. Not just anyone can sit down and write a book. It takes a solid understanding and a very firm grasp of your topic to produce a quality book. A book helps you stake a claim as someone who is an authority on a topic. This can be especially helpful early on in your career, when people often struggle to be taken seriously and even to make a good living. As Morgan puts it, â€Å"You have to establish expertise via a book.† From there, you can leverage that book to grow your career. This extra level of authority helps you almost regardless of what you do. People are more likely to trust a vet who’s written about a pet care over one who hasn’t. A motivational speaker who has a book is not only going to be able to charge more because of their book, but people are going to listen more. Same if you’re a journalist or a politician or an athlete. All this means is that you have to know going in what you hope you get out of your book. If you’re going into it expecting success and sacks full of money to start arriving at your door on the day it’s published, you’re probably going to end up disappointed. But, if you’re willing to do the work that needs to be done (like the marketing) or you’re writing a book to help bolster some other aspect of your career, then your book is going to help you make money. It might not be tons of money, not to start, but, like all things publishing, if you’re willing to play the long game and build up a following using that first book, it’s going to get easier and easier to make money with each subsequent book.

How to Get Rid of Chiggers in Your Yard

How to Get Rid of Chiggers in Your Yard Chiggers  measure a mere 1/150th of an inch  and so are nearly impossible to see with the human eye. But there is an easy way to sample your yard for chiggers if youre concerned about a possible chigger mite infestation. Be sure, of course, to wear appropriate clothing and repellent whenever you walk through an area that may have chiggers. Theyre also called harvest mites, harvest lice, and red bugs. What Do Chiggers Look Like? The tiny arachnids are found in a range of warm colors, from straw to yellow, to orange and red. You might see them in groups or moving on your legs (or you might see the welts from their bites). The larvae are the ones that bite; they have six legs. They dont have eight legs until theyre adult. Chigger Sampling Test Your first step, of course, should be confirming that you have a chigger infestation in your yard. If youve experienced the incessant itching of  chigger bites  after spending time outdoors, youll know it. But if you arent sure whether youve got chiggers or not, you can do a  quick sampling test  to confirm the offending pests are, indeed, chiggers. Before you do the test, dress preventively; otherwise, youll find the chiggers with your legs instead of your test item. Chiggers prefer moist, shady areas with thick vegetation, so focus your sampling efforts on these places in your yard. Dont bother sampling for chiggers in areas that get full sun  or where you keep the lawn mowed short. To sample your yard for chiggers, youll need one or more squares of black cardboard, each about 6 inches by 6 inches. Stand the cardboard squares on edge in areas where you suspect chiggers may be. Leave the squares in place for several minutes. Then, look closely at the cardboard. If chiggers are present, they will climb up the cardboard and gather near the top. The chiggers will be tiny and either red or yellow in color. You can also leave a shallow bowl of water in the grass for a few minutes, which will attract them as well. Look for them around the rim. You may need a magnifying glass to see them. Get Rid of Their Habitat If you find a heavy infestation of chiggers in an area of your yard, you should take steps to eliminate them. Youll definitely want to avoid walking through those areas of your yard. The best method to control chiggers is to eliminate their habitat on your property. Widespread use of pesticides to get rid of chiggers is rarely required or recommended. Again, most chiggers prefer moist, shady areas with thick vegetation. Some species do like dry areas, so keep that in mind. Prime chigger habitat includes overgrown lawns, ground covers, leaf litter, weedy areas, and densely planted shrubs or trees. Chiggers tend to cluster in certain areas because  the small females lay their eggs in one location. You may find an abundance of chiggers in one area and a complete lack of chiggers in an equally suitable area nearby. So how do you get rid of chiggers in your yard? Maintain a neat and tidy landscape, specifically: Mow your lawn regularly and keep it short, especially around the edges where the grass meets landscape beds or woody areas.Keep landscape beds weeded, and remove accumulated leaf litter.Trim and prune landscape plants regularly to keep them from becoming overgrown.Remove brush piles from your property.Because chiggers avoid sunny areas, eliminating shade in your yard can reduce chigger populations. If you feel you must treat your property for chiggers with pesticides, please  do so responsibly and safely: Treat only areas of your yard where chiggers are confirmed to live.Dont overuse pesticides by treating your entire lawn or yard.Chigger control usually requires multiple applications of pesticides during the spring.Keep children and pets off treated areas until it has dried completely. Dont allow animals to eat treated plants.Contact your local cooperative extension office to get information about which pesticides work best for chiggers in your area  and how to safely apply them.Always follow all directions on pesticide labels. Remember, the label is the law! Get Rid of Chiggers on You You might find the little red bumps on your legs or the bugs themselves. Especially check necklines, shirt and pant cuffs, and the tops of your socks.  If bumps or chiggers are found, wash your skin with soap and water in the bath or shower, and wash your clothes in hot water. Also, throw in  the wash any towels or blankets that touched the ground. The bumps will go away with hydrocortisone cream, allergy medication, or rarely, a steroid injection given by your doctor and antibiotics if the sores become infected.   On Your Pets and in Your House For your pets, wipe off  their face with a soft cloth or vet-recommended wipe. Longer, denser  fur should keep the rest of their body protected. If they do get bit, give them a warm bath. Seek treatments for the itching from your vet, as home remedies added to bathwater that is espoused online, may not work.  Ã‚   Hot water helps rid your house of chiggers as well; clean with soapy water thats at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also use a carpet shampooer that has a heat setting.   Prevention Wear long sleeves and pants when walking in tall grass, tucking your pants into your socks, and use insect repellants. Wear thick socks and high shoes or boots. If you can stand the smell, dust your socks with sulfur powder or the inside of your shoes. Stop your hike every half hour or so and brush off the places where chiggers would congregate, at the edges of clothing. Indoors, just vacuum regularly.  For  your pets, bathe them with soaps that contain flea and tick repellants.

Social Channel Reach Social channel reach data talks about how many people saw your post in their newsfeeds. They don’t have to interact with your post at all in their feeds; they just need to scroll past it. So why should you care about reach? Reach can tell you how many eyes have seen your content, which in turn can help your team establish on average how many people see your content. As you enter your data into the table, the graph below will adjust: To enter your data: Gather all of the new reach totals for each of your channels. Record them in a separate spreadsheet to enter in later. Take last week’s reach for one channel and divide it by new reach. Subtract that number from 100 and that will be your new percent of change. Enter in the new reach total into your chart after the new percent of change has been recorded. To Fill This Out: Gather your reach data and enter it into the chart above. Keep track of your previous week’s data to find your percent of change. Social Channel Shares Social shares are a part of both your weekly report and quarterly report templates. Shares happen any time an audience member shares your content to their newsfeed. Why should this matter to your team or client? Shares help show your team that your audience is finding value in your content. The more often you can provide that value to your audience, the more you create a relationship with them. Social shares in your weekly report are only going to indicate changes over the past week: While your quarterly report will show the volume of shares over four consecutive quarters and will look like this in your report: It is important to note that Instagram will not show shares data because as of right now you cannot share other people’s Instagram, except through third party apps. Before you continue, you may have noticed that the bottom of your graph has a legend that says Date Range at the bottom. You may notice  that changing the labels in your chart does not modify the labels on the graph. To update those labels, click on the chart and select, Select Data in the graph menu: A window will appear, and you’ll be able to adjust your dates in the column marked Horizontal Axis: Once you click OK, your graph should update. To Fill This Out: Gather your shares data for the new week as you did for your reach. Keep track of the previous week’s data to find your percent of change. To fill out your quarterly chart, you can move the previous week’s data down a week to make room for new data. Both graphs should update automatically. Social Channel Likes Likes refer to the number of times that people have interacted with your content by â€Å"liking† it. But why would the number of likes on your content matter? Much like when people share your content, liking your content means your audience made a connection with it. Likes allow you to make sure that your topics are on track with your audience preferences. In your weekly report, your chart will look like this: In the quarterly report, your chart will look like this: To Fill This Out: Gather your like data for the new week. Just as you did with your previous two graphs, keep track of the previous week’s data to find your percent of change. To fill out your quarterly chart, you can move the previous week’s data down a week to make room for new data. Social Channel Comments Social channel comments are another engagement metric that can help show your team and clients that what you’re publishing is connecting with your audience. You can add this into your weekly report if you so choose, however for these templates we’ve only included it in the quarterly report, which looks like this: To Fill This Out: In your quarterly report, you’ll be entering in data that you’ve gathered over the previous three quarters. To fill in this chart, move the previous three-quarters  of data back a space to make room for your new data. Remember to update the date ranges at the bottom of your chart using the same techniques shown earlier. Social Channel Follower Growth The next set of statistics you’ll learn how to record involves how many followers your social channels have gained. Why would these statistics be relevant to your team? The more followers your social channels gain, the more eyes see your content. The more eyes that see your content, the higher probability you’ll have of creating conversions. Plus if you’re gaining a following from fans in your industry or with people that are interested in your company, that means that your content is connecting with the right people. Your follower growth per channel will look like this in your weekly report: It’s important to note that your follower growth in the weekly reports tracks growth over the last four weeks. The quarterly report follower growth chart will look like this: To Fill This Out: Gather your data for the new week. Once you have that done, move your previous three weeks of data back a week in your chart to make room for the new week’s data. You can update the legend in your chart to reflect the new weeks. To fill out your quarterly chart, you’ll use the same process, however, remember the data for this graph should be reflecting every quarter, not every week. Top Posts Per Channel The top posts per channel are a key statistic that you can record both weekly and quarterly in your report templates. Why would tracking your top posts be an important part of the data that you show your teams or clients? Because top posts indicate what types of content are connecting with your audience. If you post videos once every few weeks and that video turns out as a top post every time one is sent, it could be an indicator that it’s the kind of content your audience is looking for. In your weekly and quarterly reports, your top posts will look like this: To Fill This Out: Screenshot each of your top posts per channel. Enter those screenshots into the white boxes in your template. You may need to adjust their sizing to get them to fit. Then enter the corresponding data for each post. Every social network should have that information displayed in the in-app analytics. Social Media Channel Summary The next part of your report process is going to involve just your weekly report. The totals section is meant to help you track your growth of likes, followers and reach over the course of a month. This small snapshot allows you to track spikes in growth giving your team a chance to analyze what happened over those four weeks to cause the rise. In your weekly report, your total section looks like this: To Fill This Out: You probably know the drill for this by now. To fill out this section, move your previous week’s data back a spot to make room for new data. No sweat, right? Social Channel Posts Published The number of social media  posts  that you have sent is going to be recorded in your quarterly report, not your weekly report. You could add in a section for this on your weekly report, however, if your company maintains a consistent posting schedule, it could get repetitive for your team. Your messages data will look like this in your report: To Fill This Out: Once you’ve gathered the data for each of your networks, you can move your previous quarter’s down to make room in your chart for the newly collected data. Social Media Traffic Social media traffic is divided into two different sections for your reports. The first section involves how often your social channels are causing your audience to click to your website. Why is traffic important? Traffic drives people to your website, which in turn should create conversions. The more people you can drive to your website, the more likely you are to create a conversion. Mo’ conversions, mo’ money. In your weekly report, your traffic chart will look like this: In your quarterly report, your traffic chart will look like this: To Fill This Out: Gather your traffic data and enter it into each chart. Your pie chart should adjust based on entered data. The second part of your traffic data is going to involve recording your highest trafficked content, once a quarter. In your quarterly report, you’ll find a section for highest trafficked content. It will look a lot like your top content posts section with space allotted to insert screenshots of your post and record the amount of traffic that those posts generated: To Fill This Out: Screenshot your posts and insert them into the appropriate boxes. Social Media Conversions The second last step in your social media weekly report and the second to last step in your quarterly report will involve reporting your conversions. Conversions are the number of times that your audience members follow through and complete an action that you wanted them to. Conversions can be anything from email sign-ups to buying a product. In your weekly report, your conversion chart will look like this: In your quarterly report, they’re going to look like this: To Fill This Out: You’re going to need the conversion data for each channel, which you can usually find in Google Analytics. Move your data back a week (or a quarter depending on which spreadsheet you’re in) and your graph will adjust automatically. Social Media Clicks The last step in your weekly report will involve tracking the number of clicks that your content has received on each channel. Aren’t clicks and traffic the same thing? Not exactly, clicks can refer people to places outside your website, especially if you’re posting curated content. Tracking your clicks in your weekly report is going to look like this: To Fill This Out: Gather you clicks data from each post that you sent out in the past week. Most of that data will be found in your in-app analytics. Enter the data into your chart and wait for the graph to manually adjust. Top Landing Pages The last step in your quarterly report is going to involve tracking the top three landing pages for each social media channel that you are active on. Tracking your landing pages can show where your audience is ending up the most often on your website. If it’s where you need them to go, great! If not it may be time to rethink where their initial landing point on your website is. Your top landing pages are going to look like this in your report: To Fill This Out: Pull your top landing pages out of Google Analytics and insert each  URL into each  box. Social Analysis Okay, so we’re not quite done yet! The *actual* last part of your report is going to involve writing summary notes or details that aren’t explained in the report. This section can be whatever you need it to be in to explain the data to your team: To Fill This Out: Record any observations or analytics that we’re covered in the report that your team needs to know. Impact of NGOs on Chinas Labour Rights CSR Component Essay

Impact of NGOs on Chinas Labour Rights CSR Component - Essay Example The role of NGOs is growing more important in China given the lack of political independence, as well as freedom of association, for work councils and trade unions on the factory floor. This vacuum is filled partially by labour support and labour rights NGOs, which bargain for labour rights and offer support to work for councils at factories and other workplaces. These organizations have more room to manoeuvre since they can bypass political aspects because of their business model, although this can also lead to additional dependencies that hamper their strategies for collective action focused labour rights (Lin, 2010). NGOs, thus, face the delicate task of balancing dependencies between businesses and states and expanding on what current labour laws, both national and international, provide. Their effectiveness against this backdrop will be discussed with regards to labour rights within their larger CSR monitoring mandate. NGOs working in the labour rights and labour support sector in China have several government-recognized frameworks to ensure adherence to CSR, particularly labour rights. One of this is the 2008 Labour Law that was passed in mid-2007 and implemented the next year. In passing the new labour law, the Chinese legislature strengthened worker protection and made a real attempt at adhering to internationally recognized labour regulations (Zheng, 2009). This law required that employees in all Chinese companies give their workers a written contract and restricted use of casual labourers, while also making it more difficult to lay off workers. The law also softened its stance on foreign companies that were a threat to those in China, as well as enhanced the role of the state-owned union in collective bargaining. The law also requires that all employers give equal treatment to immigrant and local employees. In addition, the law also requires that the written contracts offered by employers to w orkers meet minimum safety and wage regulations (See, 2009). For NGOs in China, most of which are funded by foreign labour rights organizations, this moves the country towards a European-style regime of labour regulations.

Life History as a method os Social Research Essay

Life History as a method os Social Research - Essay Example Choosing a candidate for my life history interview was one of the toughest decisions. As I sat on my study desk wondering who could give me a valuable insight on a society that existed more than half a century ago, I was startled by the shrill ring of the phone. It was my childhood friend who was of Indian origin .he had called to invite me over to his house as it happened to be an Indian festival and his grandma had dished out a myriad of delicacies which he wanted me to try out. And that was the moment a brilliant idea crossed my head. His grandma! Nobody could be a better subject for my interview- a different country altogether with a plethora of varied cultures and all of them in stark contrast with our own! Before I knew I was at his doorstep with my stationary, Dictaphone and artillery of questions I had framed on my way. To my disappointment, the going was not destined to be smooth. My friend's grandma is a very shy and reserved lady and she felt a bit awkward and uncomfortabl e when I approached her with my request. To start with, she just couldn't comprehend as to why someone would want to interview her and believed that she had nothing worthy enough to talk about. She also looked quite intimidated by my Dictaphone and elaborate stationary. After an hour of persuasion, pleading and begging she consented but only if I promised to safeguard her anonymity. Therefore, hereon I am going to call her "Gran". After a "warm up" session of friendly chit- chat; she gradually opened up and let me into her life story. Today, for me she was not a friend's grandmother but a woman who represented her entire community and whose words and opinions I was probably going to generalize to a whole population. I read quite bit about the plight of woman in India during yesteryears and the oppression the faced, so I decided to probe her on the issue. Gran turned 70 this summer. She was born to an average marwadi Indian family in early 1940's and raised among two younger brothers. Her childhood saw the period when India and Pakistan were undergoing a partition. She did school till about fifth grade and then was forced to drop out because her parents could not afford to send three children to school and since they felt it was more important to educate a male child , she was the obvious choice for sacrifice. Girls were at that time never really considered a permanent member of the family since they married and moved out to their husbands house, thus investing on them in any way seemed to make no sense to parents. She however is self-educating herself out of her brother's textbooks whenever she could. "I simply loved math's, I think I would have made a good teacher!" she says with a glint in her eyes. She was barely into her teenage ( which was common in 1950's) when she was married to a guy she had never seen or known and within a day her life took drastic turn - a whole new family, an unfamiliar city, a stranger she was supposed to call "husband" and spend the rest of her life with! . It was not long before it dawned upon her that her in-laws had demanded a huge amount in cash and kind to accept her as their daughter -in -law. These demands kept increasing in frequency and outrageousness and her family had no choice but to oblige because a woman abandoned by her husband and her family ha

Quantitative Research in Health, Safety, and Environment

Quantitative Research in Health, Safety, and Environment Casey Bird Abstract In this article, quantitative research in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) field will be discussed. The primary quantitative tool utilized is the safety committee. With the safety committee, direct communication lines with management on issues in the field can be achieved. Quantitative research provides the ability to understand other peoples safety needs or perceptions (Austin Sutton, 2014). It allows an organization to become a safety-first culture. In order to achieve this type of culture the organization needs to be aware of needed enhancements. This is why quantitative safety research is vital to an organization. This paper will discuss the methods utilized for quantitative research, and how the effectiveness is measured in that research. MGs safety committee will be utilized to reflect other quantitative tools. This includes Stop Work Authority (SWA), Core Values policy, and regular HSE meetings. This paper will also inform the reader on the importance of quantitati ve research to enhance any organizational programs. Quantitative Research in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) A vital primary tool utilized in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) field is the safety committee. The committee is required to provide input on incidents, recommendations, and better practices to enhance the overall organization (Kellerman, 2012). A safety committee is one way that management and frontline employees can disseminate share knowledge opinions. This sharing of information can be vital as there are different levels of insight from the employees on this committee. By having different levels of insight, an organization is able to grow and expand. The safety committee is also utilized in workplace inspections to provide insight as well as to increase production levels. A supervisor is may be busy supervising employees and production levels which could compromise safety. With a designated committee performing safety inspections, it allows the supervisors to fully perform tasks safely. A safety committee is also paramount as another tool for quantitative research. Quantitative research is a systematic process that examines relationships and interactions (Burns Grove, 2005). In order to be more proactive towards accident prevention, an organization should work towards becoming a safety-first culture. In becoming a safety-first company, an organization should initially understand the needs of the employees. This can be accomplished by utilizing questionnaires. Every safety committee member is given a questionnaire at the beginning, middle, and end of the time served on the committee. It is required each member serve a tenue of one year on the committee. So each questionnaire provides a starting point to understand individual views and on-going needs for the organization. Questionnaire results could show other immediate needs of an organization, such as more support from management.  Ãƒâ€šÃ‚   It also reveals various best practices to utilize in specific opera tions that keep people safe, and increase profit margins. These best practices allow for a much higher successful implementation rate, due to employee buy-in. With safety committee providing quantitative research to the organization, it truly provides direct money-saving tasks to an organization (Kellerman, 2012). In addition to the safety committee, all employees are issued Stop Work Authority (SWA). A SWA gives any employee the right and obligation to stop any unsafe tasks or condition. As cited in Morrison (2015), if employees utilized SWA every time an issue arises, majority of incidents and fatalities would be eliminated. However, a gap commonly seen in SWA is employees do not utilize it as often due to fear of retribution from the employer (Morrison, 2015).   To overcome this issue, MG Resins has implemented a Core Value policy. MG Resins is a polymer production plant that is under construction. The Core Value policy defines employee roles and responsibilities, including the safety committee. It outlines that all employees have the right and obligation to utilize a SWA for any individual or group tasks without any retribution. If any retaliation occurs, it should be reported to management immediately. In order to effectively and efficiently close any gaps involving HSE issues, management holds regularly scheduled meetings with employees. These meetings include weekly, monthly, and quarterly held review meetings with employees. During these meeting with management top HSE issues are presented and discussed with employees. Employees are constantly encouraged to engage in the discussion. With employees feeling that their insight is needed and approved, the more proactive effects an organization will achieve. This increase in employee involvement also increases employees morale to work in a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly workplace. MG Resins has greatly improved since implementation of these quantitative research tools. With these quantitative methods of the SWA, Core Value policy, and regular HSE meetings more employees are freely voicing opinions and reporting incidents. There were zero recordable injuries, zero environmental spills, and only two first-aid cases this year to date. Management has also fully supported and embraced proactive solutions to reduce and eliminate future incidents. With this quantitative involvement, management is now able to effectively document and understand HSE issues directly via employees. With more proactive employee involvement, the more likelihood the organizations goals and visions should be achieved. As a matter of fact, one employees quantitative feedback allowed MG to increase production rates by eliminating human involvement and establishing robotics. One production line required employees to physically bag and tie-off the final product. To complete only one order could take up to four hours. During an HSE meeting this topic was brought up not only for safety reasons, but for production as well. This proactive action of implementing robotics allowed employees to perform other critical tasks, while the robotics completed this one lengthy task. In my opinion, as a safety professional, quantitative research is a required necessity to improve any organization. The future use of quantitative research is solidified in the MG organization as well as in the HSE field. Without quantitative research employers and safety professionals would not be able to be as proactive in their programs. The future of quantitative research should include researching newer technologies. The newer generations are becoming more tech-savvy, and this may be an opportunity to get in-touch with a bigger audience. The more input an organization can receive, the greater the potential for the organization to succeed. Management needs to grasp this opportunity to support the employees and customers in order to enhance the organization. However, a roadblock with many safety professionals is the ability to convince upper management that quantitative research is vital in supporting production operations. It is my opinion, that at times, management disregards safety at employees detriment and well-being. It is only when a tragedy happens, that management will then seek out safety. A good safety professional must find common ground for proving to management that quantitative research and production go hand-in-hand. Before tragedies occur, it is my opinion, that implementing a quantitative safety program can be an asset for any organization. Any organization, including MG, would do well in finding a balance between implementing quantitative safety and production. When all levels of management and employees equally understand that no safety will be sacrificed for production, it is then that the companys goals will be achieved. References Austin Z. Sutton J. Activision: Case Study Essay

Activision was established in 1979 as a third party video game developer-publisher. Formation of Activision has been one of the most significant events for gaming industry. Activision is publisher of one of the most famous game publisher today. Games like Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and Pitfall series are published by Activision. Currently Activision is merged with Blizzard (creator of world’s most played subscription based game) to form Activision Blizzard World’s largest gaming company in a deal worth ? 9. 15 billion. Around the time of formation of Activision, companies used to dominate market place. Gaming industry was not stable. But the things have changed today it’s a global multibillion dollar business. In the starting days of Activision, they had to compete with Atari in games. But later both companies came to understanding that availability of more game for Atari platforms meant more sales of hardware. And both companies kept building games for Atari platforms competing with one another and being benefited from competition. Creating games is a long and expensive process as normal games take about 2 year and $20 million while MMOG’s may take from $50 to $100 million in five years. What Activision and Atari started as co-operative competition still prevails in gaming industry and has helped a huge deal in development of gaming industries. In 2010 there was 8% loss of packaged goods sales of consoles game but online revenue was booming. Activision was able to predict this change in gaming industry market and locate itself in front of customers. In 2010, around 50% of total revenue made by Activision came from digital sources. Since its merger with Blizzard, Activision is becoming more and more console independent. Starting as publisher for console games, today Activision publishes games for anything that can play games like ipad, iphone, phone social gaming (facebook), etc. And the ability to adapt to changing market has kept Activision in top of the gaming industry for so long. There is an argument that more than half of Microsoft’s xbox live subscribers are there for Activision’s Call of Duty. This raise an issue should Microsoft be the only one being benefited from this while Activision only gets paid once during sale of game disc. This makes console gaming dull in compared to World of Warcraft’s online subscription payment (Activision Blizzard charges fees for playing World of Warcraft online in PC). Activision’s competitor EA games seems to have found a simple solution, In order for online multiplayer, gamer have to either buy new disc or buy online registration code that allows them to go online using old disc whose online code is already used. Activision could use this strategy restricting people who bought used games and people who borrowed games to get online hence focusing only on customers who paid for online. For first time ever, in 2008 Activision was the number one US console and handheld game publisher in dollar. In 2008 it published two games: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock which were number second and first best selling game in US and Europe in dollars during fiscal year. Net revenue earned by Activision in 2008 was $2. 9 billion. Activision’s stage gate model â€Å"Greenlight Process† has helped in development in its product a lot. This process includes analysis of new products in development stage before entering market in four stages as concept, prototype, first playable and alpha. Making sure that product functions properly and is as demanded by current market customers is a very important step in product development which is carried out by high-level cross functional team. Keeping your product polished and problem free is very important. Gaming industry is product based market. Even though there will be customer grouping making your product fit and well is the most. If the product is good customer from another group can be attracted by this (RPG players are different than first person shooter players). In July 9 2008, Activision finally merged with Blizzard entertainment. Blizzard is owned by French conglomerate Vivendi and is the owner of World of Warcraft, world’s largest subscription based MMORPG. This merging helped Activision expand its reach in the industry. Instead of diversifying product Activision move toward merging has proven rather useful. Gaming industry is one of the fastest growing industries. Changes occur daily in market place. Gaming industry started with text games then moved to cartridge based platforms to today’s next gen consoles. And research shows that any gaming device staying in market for more than 10 years is considered to be outdated. So the change is obvious and Activision has to be aware of these changes. Transition period between one generation of console to another generation of console hugely effects gaming industry. Activision’s performance record shows that gaming industry faces a huge halt at these times. During recession Activision was able to maintain its sales and profit curve but in 2005 when all console developers like Sony and Microsoft were preparing for launch of their new consoles gaming companies like Activision and its rival EA has to face depreciation in their business as customers are waiting for newer version of game and gaming consoles.

The only reason you can be sure that your orange juice, eggs and cream cheese are not contaminated with bacteria that would make you sick is that public health regulates the safety of your food supply. We also teach and promote safe food handling practices that kill bacteria and help you and those who handle your food from contaminating it. Sometimes, despite everybodys best efforts, outbreaks of disease caused by contaminated food occur. The public health system then does detective work to find the source of the contamination and to stop it. We apply the methods of epidemiology to learn what the sick people have in common and locate the source of the contamination. Then we make sure that all contaminated food is removed from the supply.
